Word of the Week - October 12th, 2012

Estivate (occasionally alternatively spelled aestivate) = To spend the summer in an inactive state

Humorous (mis)use of the word: A bear hibernates in the winter months in the same way that a high school student estivates in the summer months.
(Please note that "estivate" refers to the scientific state of dormancy characterized by a lower metabolic rate, as opposed to general lethargy and laziness.  In this sense, this sentence is humorous because it greatly exaggerates the inactivity of many high school students during summer vacation).

Try using this word in your own sentence sometime this week!
