The only way an individual can trace their ancestral lineage is through mitochondrial DNA. Supposedly the Y- Chromosome mutates over generations, making this chromosome useless as an indicator of where your ancestors are from. The mitochondrial DNA that is only passed down by women has stayed in tacked perfectly throughout human evolution and is a perfect instrument for use when trying to locate your ancestral origin.
